Is Your Child a Good Candidate for Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Many parents assume orthodontic treatment doesn’t begin until all of a child’s permanent teeth have come in. However, for some children, addressing orthodontic issues early can help guide healthy jaw development and reduce the severity of future problems. This early intervention is known as phase 1 orthodontics, and it typically begins while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth.

So, how do you know if your child is a good candidate? Here are a few things to consider.

What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase 1 orthodontics, also called interceptive orthodontics, is designed to correct developing bite and jaw problems before they become more complicated. Treatment usually takes place between the ages of 6 and 10, when the jaw is still growing and can be more easily guided.

The goal isn’t necessarily to create a perfect smile right away. Instead, Phase 1 treatment focuses on creating a healthier foundation for permanent teeth and reducing the need for more extensive treatment later.

Signs Your Child May Benefit

Not every child needs Phase 1 orthodontics, but your dentist or orthodontist may recommend it if your child has:

  • Crowded or severely spaced teeth.
  • Crossbites, underbites, or significant overbites.
  • Difficulty chewing or biting.
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth.
  • Protruding front teeth that are more prone to injury.
  • Jaw growth that appears uneven.
  • Persistent thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits that affect tooth alignment.

These issues may become more difficult to correct if left untreated until adolescence.

The Importance of an Early Evaluation

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, enough permanent teeth have usually erupted for your dental provider to identify developing problems, even if treatment isn’t needed immediately.

An early evaluation doesn’t mean your child will automatically need braces. In many cases, the orthodontist simply monitors growth and recommends the ideal time to begin treatment if necessary.

Benefits of Early Treatment

When Phase 1 orthodontics is appropriate, it can offer several advantages. Early treatment may help create space for permanent teeth, guide jaw growth, improve bite function, and reduce the risk of damage to protruding front teeth. In some cases, it can even shorten or simplify Phase 2 treatment—such as braces or clear aligners—during the teenage years.

Because every child’s smile develops differently, treatment recommendations are always personalized.

If your child is around age 7 or you’ve noticed changes in the way their teeth or jaws are developing, consider scheduling an orthodontic evaluation. Early detection can make a significant difference in helping your child achieve a healthy, functional, and confident smile that lasts a lifetime.
