Phase 2 Orthodontics Pleasanton
Fine Tuning the Alignment of Your Child’s Smile
You want the best for your child’s smile, and so do we! Many families take a key first step with Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, setting the foundation for healthy oral development. If your child completed Phase 1, congratulations! However, that initial stage may not be the end of their orthodontic journey. To ensure your child’s teeth settle into ideal alignment, our Pleasanton team might recommend Phase 2 orthodontics. What Is Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment?
During Phase 1, your child may have used devices such as palatal expanders, space maintainers, headgear, or limited braces. The goal was to guide their jaws and teeth into healthy positions and set the stage for future success. Phase 2 usually takes place 1 – 3 years after Phase 1, often when a child reaches 11 – 14 years of age. We typically use braces to fine-tune the alignment of their permanent teeth. This decreases the likelihood of future treatment, optimizes oral function, promotes pleasing aesthetics, and helps your child enjoy an easy oral hygiene routine.
Does My Child Need Phase 2 Orthodontics?
Not every child requires Phase 2 after Phase 1 orthodontics, but some do benefit tremendously from additional care. We will evaluate your child’s teeth for signs such as crowding, a misaligned bite, unwanted gaps, and more. If we identify concerns, we will discuss the best path forward to support your child’s health and happiness.
Keep in mind that timely treatment often provides the best results. Getting care for your teen now, rather than making them wait until adulthood, can spare them from issues like ongoing TMJ problems, an increased risk of cavities, and even sleep issues. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to bring your child in for an orthodontic evaluation. Even if your child did not need Phase 1 care, they might still need orthodontia as a teen.
What Happens After Phase 2 Orthodontics?
Once your child completes Phase 2 orthodontics, they will need to use a retainer to maintain their newly aligned teeth. Some retainers stay fixed in the mouth, while others are removable. If your child receives a removable retainer, they should wear it for 20 – 22 hours each day initially. Later, nighttime use should be enough to keep the teeth in their proper places.
